Never would I have expected to see four-foot waves surging through Shorewood – an upper east side Milwaukee suburb where I grew up. It was impossible for residents to anticipate such tides. Although Lake Michigan runs alongside the east side, great lakes do not rise suddenly as rivers do. This was storm sewer backup and heavy rains.
Let’s not even talk about the break in the levee at Lake Delhi – a levee they had been assured was safe in recent months. Torrential rains still leave millions of people homeless in Pakistan. Neither occurrence was expected.
Ironically, along our stretch of Mississippi this year we were not threatened. Sure, my beach has been submerged most of the summer, yet no pool table was floated out of our basement (as it was in 2008).
There was never any indication that the river would take up residence in our living room for six weeks (as it did in 2001). Non- flooding was so certain that I didn’t even bother to check our flood insurance policy.
I have a street address, but I actually live at the intersection of the backwater river and the creek. Unlike our friends in Pakistan, Lake Delhi and Shorewood, who had no way of knowing they would be flooded out, I live on the floodplain. I know it’s coming – if not this year, then another year.
So why do I chose to continue living here?
Early morning breakfast on our front deck (before Jet Ski jerkiness begins) finds my husband and me gazing out pensively over our toast and eggs. A child of Lake Michigan, it takes me back to my childhood.
When the summer people and boats leave and the herons and pelicans return, it’s easy to look out at that flat muddy water and consider it benign. On soundless fall mornings, it seems nearly friendly. I have to remind myself not to anthropomorphize. The river doesn’t love us, of course. But neither does it hate us.
Still, in fall it seems that nothing so awful as high water submerging my sense of security can exist as long as that blue heron is out there fishing the creek at dawn. As long as the ducks teach their young to fly in V’s by October, all is harmony.
In winter, a lone fox traverses the frozen backwaters to scavenge for food in the neighbor’s dog bowl. It crosses the iced creek between our properties and pads up to our deck. Occasionally, it looks in through our patio doors to see a solitary writer staring back. The fox distracts me from calculating the inches of snow that will eventually melt and flow through my basement in spring.
When the ice breaks up in March, hundreds of eagles congregate to fish for dead gizzard shad rising to the surface. Something in their girlie call, “too-do-wheet-wheet, too-do-wheet-wheet” implies that upstream snow will simply evaporate into thin air. It couldn’t possibly accumulate into currents swamping the shore and threatening our homes.
In the time between floods, it’s easy to forget the carcasses in the basement left by high water. The nightly song of tree frogs, twilight fireflies illuminating these backwaters, and sunrise streaming diamonds across the surface have a way of obliterating the bone-fear of floods.
Call it low water amnesia.
